Slieve Gullion North Cairn

Multiple Cist Cairn

The north cairn on Slieve Gullion is is situated roughly 900 metres north west of the neolithic passage tomb, known as Cailleach Beara's House. The cairn, which is about 14 metres in diameter, was fully excavated in 1961. There are no signs of any kerbstones being present at the site, but during excavations it was discovered that a variety of stones, some upright, some on edge, had been wedged into crevices in the under lying bedrock to prevent slippage. A rectangular cist was found near the centre of the cairn, it was covered with a metre long capstone. A second cist was found near the east end of the cairn. After excavation the cairn was restored to it's original state.

Situated: On Slieve Gullion about 900 metres north west of the passage tomb.
